How long does it take to create a digital trail or AR quest?

"We love the idea — but we just don't have the capacity right now."

We understand. The last thing you need is another project that puts further, unknown pressure on you and your already busy team.

So let's be honest about what's actually involved.

The short answer

From first conversation to launch, most projects take between six and ten weeks. Your active involvement — the time when we need your input — is typically six to ten hours in total, spread across that period.

The rest is us.

What the process looks like

Weeks 1–2: Scoping and design

We facilitate an online or onsite workshop to determine your target audiences and impacts, the design theme and look and feel of your app, points of interest — the places and stories you want your audiences to engage with — and content themes and categories.

We then develop a design prototype, accessed through phones, so your team can experience the navigation and look and feel of the app before anything is built.

Your time: 2–3 hours

Weeks 3–4: Content development

We commission individual design assets — backgrounds, characters, rewards — for you to review and approve. We create content templates to make it easy for you to provide content for the app. For each point of interest, you'll need one image and up to 400 characters of text. You'll likely have most of this to hand already.

We then develop a final full-colour design prototype for you to review and approve. The approved prototype directs the production of your app.

Your time: 3–5 hours

Weeks 5–7: Build, testing and marketing materials

We build your app and share a version for you to test on site. We update the app based on your feedback prior to official release.

We work with you to develop marketing materials and assets to promote your app on the app stores and to your audiences on social media and on site.

Your time: 1–2 hours

Week 8 and beyond: Release, hosting, maintenance and performance reports

We publish your app and product page on the app stores. We host your app securely and maintain it, so it performs at its best, responding to any updates released by Google or Apple. We provide ongoing support and regular performance data so you can learn more about how visitors are engaging with your app and which content they are enjoying most.

Two options to explore

  • Digital Guided Tour or Walking Trail A guided route through your site, indoor and/or outdoor, that directs visitors to the places and stories you want them to discover. Ideal for inspiring self-guided exploration at any time. Engaging and accessible to all ages.

  • AR Family Quest An interactive augmented reality adventure that challenges families to follow clues, find locations across your site and unlock digital rewards. Once they have collected all the rewards, they unlock a final magical scene and can take and share photos with the AR characters and rewards on site and anywhere.

What about after launch?

Once your app is live, it runs itself. Content updates are simple when you want them. We handle all hosting, maintenance and technical support so you have nothing to worry about.

Want a clearer picture?

We're happy to prepare an outline plan specific to your site— showing what a trail or quest could look like for your visitors, with an indicative budget, so you have a good idea of what's possible.
