Help & Support: In Marie's Footsteps

In Marie's Footsteps is a free augmented reality trail at the Dales Countryside Museum, inspired by Yorkshire Dales artist and writer Marie Hartley. Follow the clues to find six of Marie's lost prints, then unlock AR to bring Hardy the dog to life.

Where is the trail?
The trail takes place in the outdoor space at the Dales Countryside Museum, Station Yard, Burtersett Road, Hawes, DL8 3NT. You'll need to visit in person to find the prints and unlock Hardy. For opening times and visitor information, please see visit the museum website.

Before you start

  • Download the app before you arrive, as mobile signal can be limited in the Dales

  • Make sure your phone is charged

  • Turn on Bluetooth – the app uses it to recognise when you're near one of Marie's lost prints

  • Allow camera access when asked – this is needed to meet Hardy in AR

Frequently asked questions

The app isn't finding a print
Check that Bluetooth is turned on and that you've allowed the app permission to use it. On Android, you may also need to allow location access, as Android requires this for Bluetooth scanning. Make sure you're close to the spot the clue describes, then try scanning again.

I can't see Hardy
Hardy appears once you've collected all six prints. Make sure you've allowed camera access, then point your phone at open, level ground in good light.

I can't save my photo with Hardy
Check that you've given the app permission to save photos to your phone. You can change this in your phone's settings.

Will I lose my collection if I close the app?
"No, your collection is saved on your phone."

Which phones does the app work on?
The app compatible with Android 8 and up and iOS 15 and up. Older phones do not have the technology necessary to operate AR features.
